Advanced Aesthetician Licensure Course Listing

The following program consists of 900 clock hours including equipment used.

Objective
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be ready to take and pass the New York State aesthetician licensure examination and will be able to work as aestheticians.

Course Description
Each course will prepare students to become aestheticians using basic and advanced aesthetic techniques and equipment to enable them to enter into the field of paramedical aesthetics and spa industries.

Orientation – 4 Clock Hours
The student will complete the internal intake forms needed for student records and school procedures. The student kit, supplies, and textbooks will be distributed to each student, as well as aesthetic regulations and the requirements for New York State licensure. Also covered in this course will be: the school rules of attendance, academics, financial responsibilities, and school policies; the role of an aesthetician in various employments within the industry; the relationship to the client or patient and the ethics that apply. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture.

Safety and Health – 20 Clock Hours
The student will be able to recognize and select the various methods of cleaning implements in accordance to local state and federal safety codes. This course will introduce OSHA, the Autoclave Sterilizer, and the distribution of material safety data sheets and their products will offer the student explicit information and insight on the products the student will be using. The student will also learn basic and emergency First Aid. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture.

Bacteriology – 25 Clock Hours
The student will review assorted bacterium that causes various stages of diseases and its development. The instructor will demonstrate methods of precaution to aid in the prevention of infection control, which the student will apply throughout the program. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture.

Structure and Function of the Skin – 35 Clock Hours
Encasing our internal structure, the outermost skin is also known as the integumentary system, which defends the body against microbial attack, regulates heat, and is constantly growing outward from within the body. In this course, students will observe and identify the Fitzpatrick scale, skin layers, skin disorders, and diseases of the skin. The student will also learn the aesthetician’s role to offer procedures that accelerate growth of the skin to aid in the prevention of the aging process and from environmental factors, as well addressing the individual concerns of each client. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture.

Facial Treatments: Student Practice – 50 Clock Hours
In this course, students will begin with an introduction to facial procedures. Students will learn to massage the face using the following techniques: Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, and Tapotement. The student will also learn body mechanics, draping, product dispensing and applications.

Facial Treatments: Level One Basic Facial Clinical Application – 50 Clock Hours
Students will perform client consultations, complete SOAP notes, and will perform basic facial treatments.

Facial Treatments: Level Two Basic Facial Clinical Application – 230 Clock Hours
The student will perform exfoliation, by means of manual and chemical applications in this advanced lab.

Chemistry and its Application to Cosmetic Skin Care Products – 30 Clock Hours
In this course, the student will learn the basic structure of chemistry. The student will learn: the precautions of variable skin conditions and how they react with specific products; how to define the classifications of specific ingredients from product contents; how to break down ingredients onto a material safety data sheet template; the pH scale as relevant to the equilibrium of the skin, as well as the application of the effective ingredients it can tolerate; how to differentiate cosmetic and cosmeceutical products in review of the pH scale; and the governing agencies and their policies. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture and group activities.

Body Procedures – 60 Clock Hours
This course teaches the recognition of communication with the client and maintaining professional conduct for customer relations, appropriate draping of the body, and how to take precautions from endangerment sites of skin disorders. The instructor will demonstrate spa services and LPG Endermologie, which the student will practice with supervision. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture and supervised hands-on practice.

Make-up Techniques – 86 Clock Hours
In this course, the instructor will teach about the history of make-up from ancient discoveries to the present trend applications. This course includes color theory for proper make-up and skin analysis. The student will learn: to recognize the application of blending, highlighting, shading, and contouring of colors; to apply day, evening, and bridal make-up; concealing and camouflage techniques to minimize imperfections and enhance features; to perform the application of artificial eyelashes; to apply theatrical makeup techniques; to perform, operate, and maintain the use of the airbrush machines for make-up application and spray tanning; about make-up products and comparison of ingredients; and sanitation procedures to prepare for the state board exam. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture and supervised hands-on practice.

Business Practices – 50 Clock Hours
In this course, the student will: develop the skills necessary for career planning; learn how to create a business plan; learn how to maintain accurate records to comply with state, local, and federal government regulations; and review NY State license renewals and fees. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture.

Job Skills – 20 Clock Hours
The student will develop a cover letter, resume, and business card to present to prospective employers. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture.

Anatomy, Physiology – 40 Clock Hours
The student will begin to learn a detailed analysis of how the body systems work beginning with the cells, blood, lymph, bones, muscles, and organs that connect our life system.

Nutrition – 16 Clock Hours
The student will study nutrition and its ability to promote growth with nourishment as it assimilates through the digestive system, as well as how the food groups offer balanced diets to promote health in our body. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture.

Medical Terminology – 20 Clock Hours
The student will define word structures, suffices, prefixes, root words, body systems, and abbreviations used in a medical setting.

Introduction to Paramedical Aesthetics- 40 Clock Hours
In this course, the student will review dermatological and cosmetic surgery procedures. This course will also cover: patient referrals for procedures that do not fall into the scope of aesthetic licensure; pre and post-operative procedures in the relationship with the aesthetician and physician; patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations; and the use of the Nikon D80 camera, Polaroid Magnifying camera, and Syris V600 Illuminated Light Visualization System. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture.

Superfluous Hair – 50 Clock Hours
The student will learn the phases of hair growth, how to apply soft and hard wax to remove hair, and also how to maintain the integrity of the skin for the client’s comfort. The student will observe as the instructor demonstrates: tweezing and eyebrow shaping; full body waxing from eyebrows to the Brazilian; and permanent hair reduction with the use of Intense Pulse Light Systems and wavelengths. The instructor will discuss how to use, maintain and operate the IPL system, documentation of forms, and pre and post care of the skin. The student will then apply these procedures.

Electricity and Machines – 50 Clock Hours
The student will receive an overview of the basic knowledge of terms that produce electrical currents. The instructor will discuss the pH scale for product penetration by means of electrical application. The instructor will also demonstrate procedures and safety of the machines in relation to electricity and how the skin responds. The student will learn electricity with machines and how the skin reacts to electrical stimulation. The student will also perform the use and maintenance of each specific machine, and practice client skin analysis with high computer technology equipment such as DiamondTome, Microdermabrasion, Gentle Waves, Silk Peel machines, Thermage, and VersaClear. The teaching methodology for this course will consist of structured lecture and supervised hands-on practice.

Body Language – 10 Clock Hours
In this course, students will learn how to identify, evaluate, and respond to nonverbal communications expressed by clients.

Professional Development and Ethics – 10 Clock Hours
Students will study topics including; self-accountability, communication, ethical boundaries, reflective listening, and quality trauma patient care.

Grading Scale
Excellent=90-100%, Above Average=80-89%, Failing= below 80%
